Perspective: 10-16-09

Things look differently from different angles. A friend of mine contacted me very upset because someone had told her that there was something unflattering written about her on an anonymous website. My friend is a somewhat sensitive soul. She was sure that if she went and read what was written, it would plunge her into a deep depression.

Before I started the day job I have now, I worked in mental health, so I was able to calm her down and get her settled. Then I went to investigate. The post wasn't anything like what she had imagined. She is a teacher, and the post was obviously written by one of her students. "your (sic) weird and you like rats"

The comments on the site were fairly old, so it wasn't even a recent student. Most of the comments were actually fairly good. Once I pointed this out to my friend, she was very relieved, but she also realized that she had over-reacted a bit. In fact, she was quite pleased with the comments from most of the other students. What had started out as depressing incident ended up raising her spirits.

Like the Hanged Man (#12 Major Arcana), sometimes it is important to look at a situation from another vantage point - to turn things upside down.
